Day 93– 11h July
2013 - Cowell to Pt Wakefield
A bit of a sleep in – still beautiful
weather. Time for scrambled eggs on toast this morning and a chat to some
friendly fellow travelers before
Walter left to cycle the short 15 kms to Lucky Bay. After I packed up I popped
into the Cowell Bakery expecting to be able to buy some lovely freshly baked
bread. I was surprised when the young girl serving told me that in the past they had brought some in from the bakery at Tumby Bay but it never sold so now they only stock a
few loaves of packaged bread that supermarkets sell. So I had to settle for what they had - not to worry.
The ferry trip across The Spencer Gulf and to Yorke Penisula took close to 2 and a half
hours and was a nice relaxing interlude – Walter placed our donations bucket on
the food counter and we received some donations for our fundraising for
Alzheimer’s Research which was great.
We arrived in Wallaroo and it was a bit of
a shock – traffic and it was quite a sizable city so we decided to drive
together to find the main highway to Pt Wakefield and there Walter got on his
bike for the 60 km ride.
Cycling Stats: 75 kms
Cycling Average 33.5 kms per hour
The landscape is still very green and I am
still sighting some stone ruins of old farm houses from a previous century.
South Australia is also very committed to promoting road safety. Some of the
signs I have seen are cleverly worded:
‘Drowsy Drivers Die’
‘Don’t Drive Drowsy’
‘Fatigue is Fatal’
There are also signs pointing out that
black posts mark fatalities on a stretch of road and red posts are markers for
where accidents have taken place – all designed to warn motorists to drive
safe. There are also huge signs that also randomly appear that read ‘Stop
Creeping’.
We arrived in Pt Wakefield and set up camp
on the bank of the river – it wasn’t as cold as it has been so it was very pleasant to
sit and watch the sunset. We decided to head up the road to the local pub and
what a great decision that was. 'Surf and turf' for $15 – a delicious steak
topped with garlic prawns and a salad bar and a delicious curried vegetable
soup & bread beforehand all whilst sitting in a very small cosy dining
room. We commented to the friendly lady who was the chef on how good it all was
and she just said ‘I love to cook’ – this certainly was very obvious.

Reflections over the river - the view from where we sat late afternoon at the caravan park |
This one was checking out his reflection as well from the other side of the river |
