Day 102– 20th July
2013 - Apollo Bay - rest day
Given yesterday’s stormy afternoon and
heaps of rain that fell through the night we ummed and aahed over whether to move on
today. It wasn’t until 8ish that we decided to spend the day in Apollo Bay and
catch up on laundry (heaps) and Walter’s cycling clothes & shoes & his
bike were all in need of attention. We also are 3 and half days ahead of
schedule so we thought why not – lets just stay put in Apollo Bay – a very
picturesque coastal town on the Great Ocean Road.
So whilst the laundry was on the go I
decided to take a nice brisk walk into the township only a short distance away.
There were people swimming and surfing and everyone out was wearing jeans,
coats & scarves so some tough people out there in the sea. It was a beautiful
morning and a very beautiful path took me to the township and I took a quick
walk up the main street before heading back.
Later we drove up town for coffee and a
great sandwich from the bakery and another walk along the main street – window
shopping and then to the local IGA for groceries.
Then a short drive to the marina, jetty and
a walk there which was nice and brisk – There were quite a few people fishing
but not having much luck when we enquired. One guy caught a baby salmon whilst
we were there but it was so small he had to release it back into the sea. I was
glad to have my woolly gloves in my handbag to put on as the wind was icy. Walter felt like some
fresh fish so we headed up to the Harbour Fish & Chip Shop which has a
lovely view over the bay and the marina area. There as we sat outside in the
afternoon sunshine we enjoyed a chat with Sophie & Jill who were on a
week’s holidays and they were interested in hearing about our journey and
seeing the layout of the campervan. Thank you for offering me some of your
lovely hot chips – Yum ! I only felt like a couple of chips and Walter only
wanted fish so when the ladies offered me a taste of their chips whilst we were
chatting it was so very friendly of them and appreciated.
This afternoon – a quiet time. Tomorrow we are leaving slightly earlier
as Walter has around 100 kms to cycle before we board the booked ferry trip from
Queenscliffe to Sorrento at 1pm and then another 50 kms or so cycling from
Sorrento. We are curious about what the weather will do as not too far away at
Ballarat there has been snow !!!
