DAY 91 - 9TH JULY 2013 - VENUS BAY TO LOCK

Day 91– 9th July 2013  - Venus Bay to Lock

The early sun over Venus Bay was beautiful – another very cold morning but no condensation on the tent so packed away dry this morning.

Today Walter’s plan was to cycle back to the highway and then around 40 kms along The Flinders Highway until we reached the dirt road of the Colton Back Road and there I was to meet him. There he needed to put his bike on the bike rack and we drove the 20 kms dirt road to join up to the Lock / Cowell Highway. Coffee here and then another 90 kms for Walter to Lock.

Cycling  Stats: 130 kms
Cycling Average Speed: 27 kms per hour

We have been very lucky with the weather – today it was a glorious fine day with a clear huge blue sky and sunny – the wind is chilly but that is to be expected in winter. So now on The Birdseye Highway and it is a very green landscape but littered with white stones & rocks. What I see is mainly herds of sheep. Mount Wedge is prominent in the landscape and it is surrounded by green green landscape. On the first section of the road I notice there has been a lot of recent rain – lots of small ponds and by the roadside bright mosses in rich red, orange and yellow colourings.

It was for Walter a challenging ride with lots of hills and a constant head wind – he is really looking forward to the next rest day which will be the day after tomorrow.

Arrived at Lock (Walter keeps asking me if I have the key…) After setting up camp in the small camping ground run by the local Lions Club I head up the street into the very small but appealing township.  I meet Jackie, a friendly lady who works in the local Op shop very cleverly named “Lock Stock & Apparel”. Then off to IGA to buy Walter some cake of some sort – this is what he craves after these hard rides – so I buy a chocolate cheesecake from the café / coffee shop section. Then to the Post Office to pay for our campsite - thank you to the lovely lady in the Post Office who I chatted with who allowed us to stay for a nominal fee. This is a friendly town and a great place to break your journey.

Early morning view over Venus Bay

A very quirky entrance to someone's property at Mount Wedge (in the background)

Stone walls - a bit English

Another interesting entrance to a property on Birdseye H'way - the sign speaks of the history of the area

Another rock wall

Lots of climbs but with very every climb there is mostly a descent luckily ...
