Day 86– 4th July
2013 - Eucla – rest day
Bliss – a sleep in. The cold winds are
roaring outside and had this been a cycle day we would be out in it. But being
a rest day means lying aimlessly tucked up in the douna, quilt, fleece blanket
and sleeping bag on top until 7.30am – very nice !!
Time for scrambled eggs on toast and coffee
in the plunger and not out of the thermos three hours later. Then lots of
laundry, blogs, emails and lunch.
I was keen for a big walk so decided to
walk down the long road to the old telegraph station which is a historical
landmark here. Walter wanted to relax so I thought no problems 4 kms there, 4
kms back – no problems. The wind is very gusty today and the tent ‘room’ is
being blown about something fierce so lots of adjustments with pegging and
fastening.
I had a head wind on the 4 km walk out – a
pretty fierce one and thought great I’ll have a tailwind on the 4 km back.
Walter became a little concerned though as the sky was quite stormy and growing
a dark shade of grey so I was very pleased after I arrived at the old telegraph
station to see him drive into the carpark. Bless him – he was my support crew
today !!!
Anyway once we got back the storm began and
the rain and wind – Walter is very relieved that he didn’t have to cycle today.
I had a look at the John Eyre Memorial and the large cross up here on the hill which
is lit up at night and provides a reference point for people travelling to
Eucla at night.
When I arrived back Walter had parked the
campervan in a different angle so that we received a bit more protection from
the very strong wind (55kms per hour wind gusts). Walter estimates that if he
would have been riding today he would have had an average of 55kms per hour –
haha !! But not comfortable with all the intermittent wind gusts. The weather
forecast is that this low pressure system should be cleared by the morning.
The prevailing tailwind should remain –
just 12 kms and we cross into South Australia tomorrow – Walter is flying !!!
(PS to the lovely friendly lady (the ledger machinist) who visited us this morning for a chat & gave us a donation - the beautiful tree is still there !!)
