DAY 2 - 20 FEBRUARY 2015 - SEVEN MILE BEACH TO SOUTHPORT

Day 2 – 20 February 2015 - Seven Mile Beach to Southport

Cycling Stats: Distance 125 klms
Average Speed: 24kms per hour

The guys were pumped and ready to go although there was a little confusion regarding the direction to take !! Not really. They left around 7am.

Walter tells me that there was a headwind and quite hilly terrain with some of the climbs being from 5% to 8%. On the plus side the scenery was magnificent especially around the small town of Franklin where much of the ride follows the coastline so lots of stunning water views. There were also dense forest areas and the highlight for Walter was being able to pick fresh apples and blackberries from trees / shrubs from the side of the road. The Huon Valley is famous for its fresh produce namely apples, berries, pink eyes (potatoes) now in season, and the huge timber plantations in the area especially around Geeveston.

Gill and I left a little later, around 9.30ish after a morning walk on Seven Mile Beach with Sooty, Steve & Gills 14yr old dog. There was some activity on the beach – with marquees being set up, ropes marking areas. We enquired and were told that the local girls secondary school would be holding their swimming carnival there today with 350 students taking part. The friendly teacher explained that since holding the carnival on the beach the participation rate of students had risen significantly. It seems that this beach holds much more attraction than a swimming pool. This is not hard to understand.

We managed to navigate our way to the A3 and over the stately huge structure of  Hobart Bridge and then onto the A6 towards Huonville where we had a great coffee and cake at The Internet Café, a great bubbly atmosphere with friendly staff. A bit of a walk down the main street and then on to Southport. We arrived there about 30 minutes before the guys after meeting them about 20kms before Southport.

We stayed in the Southport Hotel and Caravan Park – the hotel is famous as being the most southerly hotel of Australia. An interesting fact is that Southport is closer to the Antartic than it is to Cairns.

We opted for a meal in the Tavern and the meals were huge and very tasty.

Which Way ?

Seven Mile Beach beauty

Yes it is

Almost there and still pedalling hard
