Day 115 – 2 August 2013 – Coonabarabran to
Narrabri
Cycling Stats: 120
Cycling Average: 31.5 km per hour
Continuing along The Newell Highway this
morning it was a cool cloudy morning with some sudden bursts of sunshine. Walter
very much enjoyed today’s ride. The highway was generally a good surface with
mainly wide shoulders – a few climbs over the first section and then fairly
flat into Narrabri. So he was
rather pleased with his 31.5 km per hour average for the day. The landscape was
pretty similar all the way being a forested one on both sides of the highway so
not much of particular interest during this day’s ride.
Not long after I left the caravan park and
headed onto the Narrabri turnoff I felt another little jolt of excitement when
I saw the distances listed to the upcoming towns and once again right on the
bottom ‘Brisbane 684 km.’
We arrived fairly early and found a fairly
centrally located caravan park – ‘The Big Skies’ – the fill– n managers Chris
& Pam are friendly people and we enjoyed a chat with them. They are
originally from Queensland and it was good to speak to them about the last
sector of the journey and what we can expect in the way of road conditions over
the next week or so.
Steve from Samford Velos called me today
and he and a few other Samford Velos are planning to join us in Kyogle for the
last 2 days of the journey – fantastic, Walter is really looking forward to
some company after riding alone for so long. More cyclists are planning to join
us in Rathdowney for the last day’s ride and all are welcome. The plan is to
leave from Rathdowney Hotel at 9am Sunday 11th August and ride into
Brisbane and then finish at Samford. The pace will not be fast – Walter is keen
for a social, enjoyable ride – So feel free to come along !!
For anyone who is interested in the
statistics to date - Walter has cycled 12,554 kms over 73 riding days with an
average distance of 172 kms per riding day.
Our fundraising for Alzheimer’s Australia
Dementia Research Foundation is going well. The only thing is Walter has cycled
more kilometers than we originally anticipated. Originally we had the total
kilometers to be cycled at 12,350. And our target is $2 for every kilometer
cycled and as the total ride will be now be around 13,300 kilometres and
therefore our target is now $26,600. We have raised approximately $24,690 so we
are around $2,000 short of our target.
