Day 58– 6 June 2013 - Monkey Mia – Kalbari
Up at 5am as we have a big drive back to
the main highway (154 kms) before Walter can start his ride.
He began his ride from The Overlander Roadhouse
and the road today was steep ups and downs, undulating with strong head winds
which were intermittent and far more huge gusts in unpredictable patterns. This
highway is really living up to its reputation as having strong head winds.
Cycling stats: 204 kms
Cycling Average: 27.2 kms per hour
We had a morning coffee stop at a picnic
table opposite Billabong Roadhouse and we popped into the roadhouse to have a
look at the shop – these roadhouses have interesting merchandise and its always
fun to check out what they have. On speaking to the operators of this place
& telling them about our charity ride they immediately handed us $50
towards our fundraising. Terrific !!
Once again it is low shrubby landscape for
the first 80 kms and then 80 kms before Northampton a huge change to farming
land with visible farms & buildings & crops & grain silos. In the
past 3 weeks or so we had not ever seen any signs of the huge cattle stations
from the highway as these are usually located many kilometers from the main
road and we only ever see the sign posts to these properties.
Change of plan – Walter decided that he
wanted to head to Kalbari instead due to the lateness of the day and we
wouldn’t be able to reach Northampton before dark.
Arrived in Kalbari at around 4.30pm and met
some people just before we did some quick grocery shopping. Who gave us some
information about the caravan parks. So we decided to stay at Murchinson River
Caravan Park for the night. It was
a very cold night – the temperatures are certainly changing fast to winter
conditions.
Police escort and everyone has to pull over for these oversize transporters |
Mustard ant's nest |
waiting for Walter and its amazing what you see |
and these as well ! |
